Animal BrideIn the animal groom motif, a hideous beast is transformed into a handsome young man through the love of a woman who is capable of seeing beyond surface appearances. The tale of Beauty and The Beast is a classic example. Although less common, animal bride tales also exist. The storyline is just the reverse – a hag or animal-like female undergoes a metamorphosis through her connection with an insightful young man. Both Animal Bride and the Animal Groom stories challenge us to accept not just the finer qualities, but also the coarser more base qualities in ourselves and in others.
